About the work

Nine tiles holding a single finished game. The crosses and noughts are painted by hand onto a deep oxblood ground, then fired so the marks sit under the gloss rather than on top of it.

The coral and lime were chosen against the dark ground for the way they hold light. The glaze pools slightly at the edge of each stroke, which is what gives the marks their weight. No two are identical, and none of them could be printed.

A studio piece, made to work out how a small panel can carry a complete idea. It suits a splashback, an alcove, or a single wall that needs one thing worth looking at.
