The darker numerals are painted on the panel itself. Six lighter ones have been added here so the puzzle resolves to a single solution.

About the work
Eighty-one tiles carrying a sudoku grid. Seventeen numerals are painted in black on an off-white ground, and six tiles are glazed in a dusty blue so the eye reads a pattern before it reads a puzzle.
Seventeen is the smallest number of clues a sudoku can be built from, and only for very particular arrangements, and this panel sits right at that edge. Whether it resolves cleanly is beside the point on a wall. It is a surface that rewards a second look, and then a third.
Made as a studio piece rather than a commission, to test how far a functional object can be pushed before it becomes something you simply live with.
