About the work
This is the QuaySai Surfaces mark itself, made in ceramic. Nine tiles in a soft cream glaze, with a single aquamarine tile at the centre: a window cut through the grid onto water.
The three waves are brushed on by hand in white slip, standing slightly proud of the glaze so they catch the light and hold a shadow. They are not printed and not identical: the brush loads and empties across each stroke, which is the whole argument for making a mark this way rather than reproducing it.
A logo is usually the one thing a studio never makes by hand. Making it in tile first was a way of proving the process on the most demanding subject available: something with a fixed shape, that has to be right.
