About the work

The Glaze Series is about the glaze itself, with no painted image to carry it. Each panel is eight tiles in one colour around a single centre tile in another, so the surface does all the work: depth, gloss, and the way the speckle falls across each tile.

In the blue panel, a sky-blue glaze flecked with white surrounds a deep cobalt centre. In the yellow, an iron-speckled yellow surrounds a pale tile scattered with blue, orange and yellow. No two tiles carry the same pattern of speckle, because none of it is placed by hand. It falls where it falls in the kiln.

These are the glazes in their simplest arrangement, and a starting point for a commission: any of them can be used across a whole wall, or as the single tile that changes it.
